1-2pm Thurs 2 May 2024

In this presentation Mark will talk about why and where there is a need for seed-based restoration; specifying and sourcing native origin seed in the global context; the three-stage approach for ecological best practice; seed zones and maintaining local genetic diversity; traceability, transparency and quality; timing; harvesting methodology and logistics.

Receptor sites will also be discussed in the context of the challenges of natural colonisation; stockpiled topsoil; the theory of site preparation, machinery used and seed testing; sowing rates for Yellow rattle and brush harvest material; the main differences between brush and green hay transfer methods; mycorrhizal fungi; management and remedial action.

Postgraduate Certificate in Biodiversity and Nature Conservation  | 4 day course TU Dublin, ECTS: 5 Credits

Closing date for applications: 17th May 2024, subject to availability
Teaching commences: 10 June 2024, in person attendance over four consecutive days
Module fee: €450 (An 80% fee subsidy is offered by the Higher Education Authority, for eligible applicants, which reduces the overall cost from €450 to €90 during 2023-24)

What is biodiversity and why is there a crisis? How should we approach nature conservation, and what steps are necessary to halt biodiversity loss and degradation of natural habitats?

This part-time professional certificate module sets out the basis for understanding and addressing biodiversity loss. It presents the rationale for conserving natural habitats: their ecological complexity, historical continuity, and biogeographical significance. Key habitat types in Ireland are examined; the reasons for habitat loss and degradation are discussed; and our role in managing habitats for the continued survival of indigenous flora and fauna is explored.

The module is suitable for those from a non-scientific background, including (but not limited to) those involved in planning and design of the built environment.  Entrance to the course is normally contingent on an appropriate honours (minimum 2.2 grade) degree.

The module is supported by the Building Change project, led by TU Dublin School of Architecture, Building and Environment.
